Couch to 5k

Hi Everyone,

As you know the January milage is due this week and as February approaches you may need a little extra motivation to keep the children interested.

So, the challenge is this …….’The NHS Couch to 5k’

I took up the challenge in the last lockdown as a way of setting myself something to aim for. I have always been motivated to keep fit but have never been keen on running not even in my hockey days. After back surgery sitting around is a bit of a nightmare so during lockdown one, I was walking miles and despite having some beautiful routes around Berwick I felt I needed a little bit more. At the time there was the NHS 5km challenge floating around. I’m not going to pretend I thought at the time there would be no chance, but I was spurred on by my daughter to give it a go. Kids just have that canny knack of gentle persuasion!!She found me ‘The NHS Couch to 5k’ app and filled with apprehension off I went.

I know what you’re thinking….but it’s a great motivator and knowing our Tweedmouth West children they’ll definitely be up for a challenge.

For more information visit www.nhs.uk/better_health . The app provides a weekly programme and advise of how to get started. Week 1 starts off gently with a little jog for 60 seconds and walking for 90 seconds for a total of 20 minutes. You can repeat week 1 as many times as you want or move onto week 2 the choice is up to you. It cost nothing but it’s a great motivator. I’m sure Miss Dixon will agree that it’s a win-win app as she’s currently on week 5 of the challenge and loving it.

Keep fit, stay safe and look forward to hearing your stories.
